Maclean Quits the Gazette
Nov 21st, 2009 | By admin | Category: MediaGazette reporter David MacLean will quit the paper after three years, and the 23-year-old is due to take up his new post on the Leicester Mercury’s politics desk within weeks.
The campaigning journalist has been at the centre of some of the biggest local political stories of the past few years. He broke the news of Eddie McAtominey’s drink drive arrest, dug into the missing ballot box scandal, used the Gazette to highlight the clampdown on democracy by South Tyneside Council, and scooped the region’s journalists with an exclusive interview with Tony Blair.
The Leicester Mercury is owned by the Daily Mail and has around 150,000 readers each day. It is the sixth-largest selling title in England, and the largest title in the Midlands.

Well done David, I hope you enjoy your new job. I also hope this is merely a new path which will see you one day return to the north east.
What I find disappointing is that the news of your departure was revealed by this site, with no acknowledgement of your contribution to local politics from The Gazette. Whilst I wasn’t expecting an “obituary”, a mere thank you and good luck would have been nice.
Perhaps Ian Malcolm hasn’t authorized it yet!
Stuff and nonsense I thought a blog broke the Eddie Mac story the day before the Gazette.
