Whiteleas needs you!

For over three years the Independent Alliance has supported Robin Coombes as an Independent candidate in Whiteleas. Unfortunately Robin has indicated that he will not be standing for the Independent Alliance in May 2010.

As you will know from our newsletters the Independent Alliance is the only group who opposes the Labour Party on the Council. All other groupings of councillors (Conservatives, Liberal Democrats, Progressives, and ‘Real’ Independents) support the Labour Group. They consistently vote with them on all major issues and many of them have accepted paid positions from the Labour leader of the Council, Cllr Iain Malcolm.

For example:

  • Cllr Terry Haram (‘Real’ Independent Whiteleas) £2,409 Vice chair Human Resources
  • Cllr George Elsom (‘Real’ Independent Cleadon Park) £4817 Vice chair of Pensions
  • Cllr Jim Capstick (Progressive) £7,226 Leader of Main Opposition Group
  • Cllr David Potts (Conservative) £7,226 Vice chair of a Select Committee

Remember this is in addition to the £7,000 plus basic allowance!

The Independent Alliance feel that by accepting these paid positions from the Leader of the Labour Council, Cllr Iain Malcolm, the ‘opposition’ councillors could be described as having been bought off. They certainly do not actively oppose the Labour group which is what they were elected to do.

If you want to see an Independent candidate who will oppose the Labour group and who will put the interests of local people first why not stand yourself?

The Independent Alliance is actively looking for a candidate in Whiteleas, so if you are interested in becoming the next Whiteleas councillor contact the Independent Alliance at www.achanceforchange.co.uk
