A weekend of spectacular entertainment is underway as thousands of people descend on Tyneside to take part in one of the region’s biggest and most popular events.

The Mouth of the Tyne Festival takes place at the mouth of the river Tyne in South Shields and Tynemouth and visitors are being encouraged to make the most of all of the entertainment on offer and to soak up the unique atmosphere.

Councillor Jane Branley leader of South Tyneside Council’s largest opposition group said,

“This wonderful event continues to grow in popularity and it’s a great way for local people and visitors from further afield to enjoy world class entertainment, magnificent coastline and of course our own Geordie hospitality”

The festival will feature a weekend of world-class street theatre, live music and special one-off performances in Tynemouth and South Shields. Visitors are being encouraged to make the most of all of the mainly free entertainment and to soak up the wonderful atmosphere.

Musical highlights will include folk musician Seth Lakeman, soul singer Diane Birch, rock and pop band The Lightning Seeds, and the festival headliner – English singer-songwriter and Brit-award winner James Morrison.

This year’s pageant in Tynemouth will include hundreds of local school children embracing an Indian inspired theme, with music, dance and home-made costumes.

South Shields’ opening parade will include collaboration between French and British-Asian re-interpreters of Bollywood. The performance will take place on the seafront involving dozens of performers, musicians and a life-size model elephant and will conclude with a spectacular firework display.

Other weird and wonderful acts performing throughout the weekend include; make-up demonstrations combined with circus and comedy, a crash course in how to behave at the dinner table, culinary demonstrations with an Australian TV cook, and a comical Belgian duo that perform acrobatics and spectacular juggling with lots of audience interaction.

A New York-based reggae band, one of Spain’s biggest hip hop acts, an Indian brass band, a South Asian dance company and break dancers from Newcastle-based ‘Bad Taste Cru’ will also perform at the festival.
